Food industry Science and Engineering
Food science and technology is one of the branches of agriculture, that focuses on the physical, chemical and biological quality of plant and animal raw materials and maintaining their quality until they reach the consumer. The purpose of this field of study is to train experts who, relying on scientific information and reserves, can work in various food technology fields such as the implementation of food processing operations, packaging and storage of plant and animal products, quality control, design and optimization of production lines of food factories. Furthermore, they should have the ability to direct and supervise the technical production and processing units of agricultural products. In addition, the specialists of this field are helpful in planning and designing the development methods of these industries in agricultural-industrial areas, and they can work in the educational and research affairs of this field.
Department of food science and technology of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University of Khuzestan has started its activity since 1991 and has been able to train many experts in this field. This department is located in the faculty of animal science and food technology in the eastern side of the university. Currently 6 members of the academic staff and 4 members of the non-academic staff in this department are engaged in serving and teaching students in the bachelor's and master's levels in four groups, namely food biotechnology, food chemistry, food technology and food industry. The department also has PhD students in the group of food technology.
This department has four specialized laboratories, including food microbiology laboratory, food chemistry laboratory, materials technology laboratory and post-graduate education laboratory, which have a wide variety of equipment such as ultrasound machines, ultra turrax, texture analyzer, flour analyzer, industrial mill, Oil extractor, centrifuge, Gerber centrifuge, rotary evaporator, spectrophotometer, spray dryer, vacuum oven, oven, incubator, cabinet dryer, bain-marie, electric oven, four-zero digital scale, pH meter, shaker, microwave oven, microbial hood, chemical hood, fryer, simple mixer, vortex and refrigerated incubator for teaching and research of students. Also, this department has a dairy industry pilot plant for educational, research and production uses.
